Game of Thrones Minecraft Servers, Explained
A Game of Thrones Minecraft server is a multiplayer Minecraft world built around George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. They fall into two kinds: build-and-explore servers, which recreate Westeros as a faithful map to walk through, and house-and-war servers, where players run a noble house and fight over territory. WesterCraft is the second kind.

What is a Game of Thrones Minecraft server?
A Game of Thrones Minecraft server is a multiplayer Minecraft world themed on A Song of Ice and Fire — the book series behind HBO’s Game of Thrones. Instead of a generic survival world, the map, factions, and progression are built around Westeros: its regions, its noble houses, and its wars.
They split into two categories that want very different things from you:
- Build-and-explore servers — the world itself is the point. Volunteers recreate cities block by block and you tour a finished, screenshot-accurate Westeros. Little to no combat or progression.
- House-and-war servers — the politics are the point. You found a house, hold land, make and break alliances, and take territory from other players. The map is a board, not a museum.
How is WesterCraft different from a normal survival server?
On a normal survival server, land is whoever got there first and nothing contests it. On WesterCraft, land is the entire game. Your house claims a keep on a shared map of Westeros, upgrades it through five tiers, and holds territory that neighbouring houses can take by force.
- Keeps, not bases. A keep is a claimed, named seat on the shared war map, visible to every other player, at a tier from 1 to 5.
- Territory is contested. Borders shift by chunk-level occupation — you take ground by holding it, not by breaking a single block.
- Houses are the unit of play. Diplomacy, alliances and betrayals happen between houses, and they are the reason wars start.
- A public record. Every keep, siege and shift in the map is written into a community wiki, so the campaign has a history you can read.
Is WesterCraft free, and is it pay-to-win?
WesterCraft is free to join and it is not pay-to-win. That distinction is enforced in the code, not just promised: everything sold in the shop is render-only cosmetics — keep crests, site themes, and appearance items. No purchase grants land, resources, combat advantage, or a faster keep upgrade.
Keep tier upgrades are earned with gold collected in-game. A paying player and a non-paying player advance at exactly the same rate.
How do you join a Game of Thrones Minecraft server?
You need Minecraft: Java Edition — Bedrock, console and mobile editions cannot connect. For WesterCraft specifically:
- Open Minecraft Java Edition on version 1.20.1.
- Go to Multiplayer → Add Server.
- Enter play.westercraft.net as the server address.
- Join the Discord to request your house and claim your first keep.
No mod installation is required to play — the war systems run server-side on Fabric.
Which Game of Thrones Minecraft server should you pick?
Pick based on what you actually want to do for the next hundred hours:
| If you want to… | Choose |
|---|---|
| Walk through a faithful, finished recreation of King’s Landing or Winterfell | A build-and-explore server such as WesterosCraft |
| Run a noble house and fight other players for land | A house-and-war server such as WesterCraft |
| Build freely in a Westeros-themed world with no politics | A themed survival or creative server |
They are not competitors so much as different genres that happen to share a setting. Plenty of players use both.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Game of Thrones Minecraft server?
It depends what you want. WesterosCraft is the most complete recreation of Westeros to explore — volunteers have been building it since 2011. WesterCraft is built for playing a noble house: claiming a keep, holding territory, and fighting other houses for land. Explorers should pick the former; players who want politics and war should pick the latter.
Is there a Game of Thrones Minecraft server for Bedrock or console?
No. The established Game of Thrones Minecraft servers, including WesterCraft and WesterosCraft, are Java Edition only. Bedrock, console, and mobile editions use a different network protocol and cannot connect.
Do I need mods to play on a Game of Thrones Minecraft server?
On WesterCraft, no. The house, keep, and territory systems run server-side on Fabric, so a vanilla Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 client can connect and play. Some other servers do require a custom block mod to render their builds correctly.
How much does WesterCraft cost?
Nothing. WesterCraft is free to join with a Minecraft Java Edition account. The shop sells only cosmetic items — crests, themes and appearance options — which are render-only and never affect gameplay.
What Minecraft version does WesterCraft run?
WesterCraft runs Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 using the Fabric mod loader server-side. Players connect with an unmodified 1.20.1 client at play.westercraft.net.
